Greetings from the classroom!

I hope you’re all having a great week and enjoying these final days of summer – especially with beautiful weather we have been having!! This afternoon the class enjoyed a delightful walk around the neighborhood. Hopefully these kinds of days will continue a little longer.
Thank you for everyone who was able to attend our Back to School Night on Wednesday. It is always wonderful to get a chance to sit down and chat with you all. If you were unable to make it, you can find notes from the evening attached. As always, if you have questions, please send me an email and we can schedule a chance to talk.
In the classroom, students are continuing to settle in well. I have begun the year with what Maria Montessori called The Great Lessons. This week I shared the Story of Humans and their “special gifts” – hands to work with, hearts to love with, and minds to imagine with. We also began working with the first Timeline of Humans which shows what life might have been like as an early human being.
In addition, Level 1’s have been studying combining and separating, finger knitting, cursive handwriting, fundamental human needs, counting big numbers, the needs of plants and where we get our bread from. They are also excited to start work on pin maps and beginning animal reports.  Level two students have been exploring watercolor painting, writing in paragraphs, spelling, long division with materials, chemical change, parts of a flower and the history of clothing.
We have some busy weeks ahead, so here are some notes to help keep you organized…
Going Out Chaperone Training – Tuesday, September 20 @ 3:30 PM
Any parents interested in supporting the going out program as a chaperone should join me and Tessa next week at 3:30 to discuss the ins and outs of how to be a good chaperone. We’ll cover some philosophy and help prepare you for how to best support our students as they plan their own, personalized field trips. Please bring a schedule of your availability and your up to date volunteer forms (as needed).
Library Field trip – Wednesday, September 21
The lower elementary class will head to the Richland Public Library next Wednesday to get a tour and learn how to use the library computers to search for research information. We plan to walk to the library starting at 10:15. Our tour begins at 11:00. Afterwards, we will enjoy lunch at the park (please send a “brown bag” lunch including a napkin and utensils) and then catch the bus back to school. It should be a very fun day! If you’d like to accompany us, send me an email. Please be sure to send your child’s library card to school by early next week if you haven’t done so already. (Please note that the lower elementary and upper elementary classes are going to the library on separate days)
School Photos – Thursday, September 22
School photos are first thing on Thursday morning. Information about photo packages went home in your take-home folders today. If you have any questions, please email Jen.
Middleton Farm Tour – Friday October 7th
Both elementary classrooms will be attending a Farm Tour on Friday, October 7th. We understand that this field trip coincides with Sagebrush Montessori’s annual trip to Country Mercantile and that some families may choose to have their child attend the Country Mercantile trip instead of the Middleton Farms event. If this is the case, please mark the appropriate box on your child’s permission sheet and return ASAP so we can coordinate the right number of drivers (permission sheets will go out in the next few days). If you would like to volunteer to drive, please send me an email. The trip will last from approximately 8:45 – 12:00.
Maternity Leave / Conferences
My maternity leave sub, Rose, will begin on October 3rd and we will work together until I begin my leave. She will remain in the classroom through November 23rd. I will be back in the classroom after the Thanksgiving Holiday on November 28th. At this time, I plan to postpone parent teacher conferences until December. If you’d like to meet with me to discuss anything before I go on leave, please email me right away so we can get something on the calendar.
That’s all for now! I hope you all have a great weekend.
Sincerely,

Samantha May
